Who the #@$%! are you?
Carlos M. Mangual, graphic designer, comic-book artist and digital letterer.
What projects have you worked with RBA so far?
Um... everything!
When did you realize you were a lettering GOD?
When Angel got down on his knees and begged me to do the lettering for Gunbreed.
How involved are you during the process of the production of a comic? Talk about the lettering process and other functions you do.
I usually am involved from the beginning. I'll get the script and read it to see how text heavy it'll be and what sound effects will be used. Sometimes I start doing the lettering when the book is still in it's pencilled stages. And it's really great to see the finished pages later in the process. I've even been Angel's "go to guy" when he can't get AC to perform a task because I have no life. Things like, setting up pages in Photoshop because they're not the right size or even having to completely rearrange artwork for a short story that they once printed. So yeah, I've done a bit more than just lettering for this fledgling funny book company.
Taking out all the hours you waste playing PS3, how long does it actually take you to letter a comic?
I've never timed myself. But I have been known to finish a 24 page book in a weekend. I don't know... guess it just depends on how quickly Angel needs 'em done. Or how inspired (or bored) I am.
Behind every great letterer there is a great copy editor. Who is Maité and what does she do to assist you with the lettering process?
Maité is my girlfriend, sex slave, unpaid intern and lettering padawan learner. She's assisted me with some lettering gigs and even done some digital lettering all by herself. Not only does she look out for any spelling or grammatical errors that might be in the script, she'll also help with laying out a page and then I'll go in and put in the finishing touches.
If a tree fell and no one saw the lettering sound effect, did it really fall?
Wow... deep. There's not enough marijuana in the world for me to smoke to answer that question so I'll get back to you on that.
Angel Fuentes is AWESOME. Discuss.
Legally I can't discuss the reasons as to why he is awesome. But I will say he's very giving, if you know what I mean.
Give upcoming letterer wannabees a tip or two on lettering, oh Great Spellchecking One!
Well, I'm a digital letterer, so if you're going to do it digitally, learn how to use Adobe Illustrator (it's the preferred program of digital letterers.) Read "Comic Book Lettering: The Comicraft Way" It's a little old, but there's some good lettering tips in there (for both traditional and digital lettering.) Visit their website at: www.comicraft.com, get some good free fonts at www.blambot.com and last but not least, practice, practice, practice!
Plug it! Plug it good! What other projects are you involved with?
There's a few projects I'm working on besides lettering for RBA and my own comic-book, but I don't want to plug anything that isn't a sure thing yet. But I will ask everyone to please buy A Self Portrait Comic #5! Coming March 2010!
